The Officers of Olympic Softworks had our first meeting on May 5, at a local coffee shop.

Here is a very brief summation of our time there:

We discussed our current situation in several ways.

  1. Our current legal status. The only remaining obstacle is licensing with the city of Lacy before we actually do any business transactions. Lacey does not allow online registration, so I had to download the form and have a sundry form emailed to me...they are now being snail-mailed to the good people in Lacey's city government and hopefully we will have our local business license soon.

  2. We need to line up a list of “preferred recipients” for computers that we receive and intend to donate. Part of this is creating pages on this website to allow people to self-register, part was agreeing to aggressively solicit larger organizations in our two target groups. Elder citizens, and at-risk children.

And we discussed organizational needs as we begin Phase 1 of our organizational plan, with a concerned look towards Phase 2.

  1. Work on our website needs to be stepped up. Especially in the areas of how to make use of Free Software written from the perspective of a person who used to use Microsoft Windows. This being what are the already existing analogues of standard windows applications such as Office and Internet Explorer? But also focusing on how to get applications originally written for Windows to run under the WINE compatibility layer, including popular games.

  2. We discussed our compensation; what jobs we can expect to be compensated for and what jobs are simply community service(mostly the latter) so there will be no hard feelings among ourselves. I want to make clear that this organization is dedicated community service by providing free technical education and computers(half of all computers we get will be donated for free to targeted groups and half at extremely low-cost to everyone else).

  3. We addressed our individual need for I.T. Certificates. All of us are power-users of computers, but only one of us has any actual professional I.T. Background, and none of us has any usable school credits or relevant vocational certificates. These will begin with all Officers that work on computers or teach obtaining A+, then Net+, and then Linux+. From there we will likely broaden out with some of us going for different, larger certificates.

  4. We also discussed creating podcasts as basic training for people on DVDs, and on YouTube. We may turn this into a more in-depth video program that we may offer as an incentive for donations.

Meeting began at 5:20pm and ended at 6:50pm

All 3 Officers were in attendance:

Dave Thompson

CEO, CIO, COO

Ramona Stevens

CFO

Derek Wilson

CBO

On Monday, February 13th, the articles of incorporation for Olympic Softworks as a nonprofit corporation in Washington state were submitted.  And this weekend, the first couple computers will go on sale on Craig's list.  The money from their sale will go towards getting a smallish lot of computers from the Washington State surplus outlet so we can start our real work in the community.

This is a great month for us all here.  Come back and visit often for news on what we are doing here at Olympic Softworks, what is happening in general Free Software news, and important developments about all the major GNU/Linux distributions.

Our New Site! PDF Print E-mail

Here it is!  Thew new home of Olympic Softworks.org and P.A.C.T.

As of June 2011 we have switched the software that powers our website from the DRUPAL content management system(CMS) to JOOMLA.  This was to allow our site to grow in ways that better fit the goals of the Olympic Softworks charter, as well as being a little more friendly to the kind of material and administration we are able to provide.

This is no slam on DRUPAL!  The DRUPAL project is an excellent CMS portal for community based content, but the goals of Olympic Softworks lay in the direction of working with the general public and non-professionals in a training capacity as opposed to providing a white-board for code and project collaboration.

As the days/weeks go on I will be populating this site with things from the old site that I want to keep and all kinds of new goodies.  So check in often, go over the menus and their content and let me know if you found the subject, and the site, interesting!

Thank you for stopping by!
